"Pipettes to Patients" podcast launch explores brain tumor research at Upstate
In the debut episode of Pipettes to Patients, a new podcast from the Upstate Cancer Center, host Dr. Brittany Simone sits down with Dr. Mariano Viapiano, Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Physiology and Director of the Brain Tumor Repository, and Dr. Michael Mix, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology. Together they delve into the complexities of brain tumor research, with a focus on glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive and deadly form of brain cancer.
The inaugural episode aligns with National Brain Tumor Awareness Month and offers a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how basic scientists and clinicians collaborate to improve treatment for patients.
Why Focus on Brain Tumors?
The motivation behind their work is clear: the challenge and the unmet need. Dr. Mix notes the privilege of treating patients with such devastating diagnoses and the precision required in radiation therapy for brain tumors. Dr. Viapiano, originally trained in developmental neuroscience, was drawn to the biological complexity of glioblastomas and their potential to reveal insights that could shape future treatments.
Bridging the Lab and Clinic
A key theme is the importance of collaboration across disciplines. At Upstate, Dr. Viapiano says the smaller size of the institution fosters closer interactions between researchers and clinicians. He often participates in tumor boards, where complex cases are discussed among neurologists, oncologists, pathologists, and surgeons. These conversations can spark new research ideas and ensure scientific investigations remain clinically relevant.
Challenges in Glioblastoma Research
Both doctors discuss the major hurdles in glioblastoma (GBM) research: difficulty visualizing the tumor, uncertainty around recurrence, and the need for more precise molecular profiling. The limitations of current imaging and treatment boundaries make it difficult to fully eradicate the tumor or predict its behavior.
Dr. Viapiano explains the potential in using patient-derived tumor samples to grow models in mice and on “labs-on-a-chip” to test new therapies. However, translating these findings back into effective treatments remains a challenge, especially given funding constraints.
The Role of Clinical Trials
Dr. Mix shares his approach to discussing clinical trials with patients, emphasizing informed consent and understanding. He highlights the altruism of many patients who choose to participate in research not just for themselves, but for the benefit of future patients.
“They may be taking part in something larger than them,” Mix says, noting the inspiration he draws from their courage and selflessness.
