Radioactive Materials/Devices

Radioactive MaterialThe possession and use of radioactive materials or devices producing ionizing radiation is authorized by the New York State Department of Health. Any individuals wishing to purchase, use and dispose of radioactive materials or devices at Upstate must obtain approval from the Radiation Safety Officer and the Radiation Safety Committee to ensure the maximum beneficial use of radiation with the minimum practical risk to patients, research subjects, employees and the general public.

Human Subject Research

For research studies involving human subjects exposed to ionizing radiation of any type, procedures have been established by the Institutional Review Board which may require additional review by the Radiation Safety Committee prior to IRB approval. If RSC review and approval is required (as per IRB application), a complete IRB application must be submitted to the RSC. The RSC submission can be simultaneous to the IRB submission.
